Vitamin D helps maintain immune system health. It also supports muscle function, bone mineralisation and calcium absorption.
One reason Vitamin D becomes a winter topic is that our bodies produce vitamin D when skin is exposed to sunlight. During winter many people spend more time indoors, wear more layers or have less regular sun exposure.
The science behind vitamin D and immune health comes back to vitamin D receptors, often called VDRs. These receptors are found in different tissues throughout the body, including cells involved in immune function. Once vitamin D is made through sunlight exposure or consumed through food or supplements, the body converts it into circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D. This can then be converted into its active form.
Active vitamin D works through vitamin D receptors and can influence normal gene activity inside immune cells. This is important because immune health relies on communication.
