Zinc, Testosterone and Men's Health

Zinc and testosterone are often mentioned together in men's health conversations. My interest in supplements first developed during my professional rugby career, when I became increasingly curious about how nutrition and nutrient status related to testosterone levels, recovery and overall performance. As an athlete, testosterone was naturally an important topic but it was also an area filled with exaggerated claims and quick-fix promises.

That is why I believe the honest answer matters: zinc is not a magic testosterone booster.

Zinc is an essential mineral that helps maintain reproductive system health, healthy reproductive hormones and sperm health. It also has antioxidant roles and helps reduce free radicals formed in the body.

Low zinc status can occur in men, particularly when dietary intake is inadequate or nutritional needs are not consistently being met. As the body has no dedicated long-term storage system for zinc, regular intake helps maintain adequate zinc status.

In this article, I'll look at what zinc actually supports in men's health, what the research says about zinc and testosterone, the difference between total and free testosterone and why zinc should be viewed as a foundational mineral rather than a quick fix.

Why Zinc Comes Up in Men's Health

Zinc is an essential mineral involved in many normal processes throughout the body. It supports immune system function, wound healing and skin health. It also plays an important role in reproductive health.

Zinc helps maintain:

  • Reproductive system health
  • Healthy reproductive hormones
  • Sperm health
  • Antioxidant activity and reducing free radicals formed in the body

This is why zinc is often discussed alongside testosterone and male reproductive health. However, much of the research has been conducted in people with low zinc status, low testosterone or specific health conditions, that context matters when interpreting results. 

Zinc and Sperm Health

Testosterone is only one part of the reproductive health picture. Zinc helps maintain sperm health, and research has examined the relationship between zinc status and measures such as sperm motility and morphology.

One area researchers have looked at is the role zinc may play in maintaining the structure of the sperm cell itself. Zinc has been studied in relation to sperm chromatin integrity, which refers to how tightly DNA is packaged inside the sperm head. Proper chromatin packaging is important because sperm cells need to carry genetic material in a stable form as they mature. 

Zinc is also present in the fluid surrounding sperm, where it forms part of the biochemical environment involved in normal sperm function. Research has examined its relationship with measures such as sperm motility, morphology and semen quality.

A systematic review and meta-analysis by Zhao and colleagues (2016) involving 3,467 men found that seminal plasma zinc concentrations differed significantly between the populations studied. Zinc supplementation was also associated with changes in several semen parameters, including sperm motility and the percentage of sperm with normal morphology.

The findings should not be interpreted as showing additional zinc will improve sperm parameters in every healthy man, but that adequate zinc helps maintain reproductive system health and sperm health.

Zinc, Oxidative Stress and Reproductive Health

Zinc's role in reproductive health goes beyond hormones and sperm development. Zinc is also an antioxidant and helps reduce free radicals formed in the body. Free radicals are naturally produced during normal metabolism, but when their production exceeds the body's antioxidant defences, this can contribute to oxidative stress.

This is particularly relevant to sperm because sperm cell membranes contain high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These fats are important for normal membrane structure and function but they can also make sperm membranes more susceptible to oxidative damage. Excess oxidative stress can affect the sperm membrane and other cellular structures involved in normal sperm function. This is one reason antioxidant defence is frequently studied in male reproductive health.

Zinc contributes to the body's antioxidant defence systems and helps reduce free radicals formed in the body. This provides a biological explanation for why adequate zinc status may be relevant to maintaining the cellular environment needed for normal reproductive function. A systematic review (Dimitriadis et al., 2023) examining antioxidant supplementation in male reproductive health included research on zinc and its relationship with semen parameters and oxidative stress. However, many of the studies used zinc alongside other antioxidants, making it difficult to attribute every observed effect specifically to zinc.

The more accurate conclusion is that zinc has antioxidant activity, helps reduce free radicals formed in the body, and helps maintain sperm health and reproductive system health.

Zinc and Testosterone: What Does It Actually Support?

The most accurate way to describe zinc's role is:

Zinc helps maintain healthy reproductive hormones.

Testosterone production is controlled through a communication pathway known as the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Signals from the brain stimulate the release of luteinising hormone, or LH, which then signals the Leydig cells in the testes to produce testosterone.

Zinc does not act like testosterone, and it does not directly supply the body with hormones. Instead, it is involved in biological processes relevant to normal reproductive system function including enzyme activity, protein synthesis, cell division and sperm development.

Zinc also appears to be involved in some of the cellular processes underlying normal testosterone production. Testosterone is produced primarily by Leydig cells in the testes, and research has explored how zinc status may influence enzymes and signalling pathways involved in steroid hormone synthesis. Experimental evidence suggests that inadequate zinc status may affect these processes, although the precise mechanisms in humans are still being investigated.

A 2023 systematic review by Liger Te and colleagues found that lower zinc status was associated with lower total testosterone in some populations. Some of the included studies also reported increases in testosterone following zinc supplementation, particularly among people with a zinc deficiency, low baseline testosterone or specific health conditions. 

However, the studies varied considerably in their populations, zinc forms, dosages and treatment durations. The findings therefore should not be interpreted as showing that zinc universally increases testosterone in healthy men. The evidence is more relevant to maintaining adequate zinc status and supporting healthy reproductive hormones.

Total Testosterone and Free Testosterone

Testosterone is not measured as a single, simple value.

Total testosterone refers to all the testosterone circulating in the blood. Most of it is attached to proteins, particularly sex hormone-binding globulin, or SHBG, and albumin.

Free testosterone refers to the much smaller proportion that is not bound to these proteins and is available for the body to use.

This distinction matters because two men can have similar total testosterone results but different free testosterone levels. Changes in SHBG can affect how much testosterone is available in its free form, even when total testosterone remains within a similar range. Importantly, the 2023 zinc and testosterone review did not provide enough evidence to properly assess zinc's relationship with free testosterone.

Does Zinc Increase Testosterone?

Zinc may support normal reproductive hormone function when zinc status is inadequate.

In some populations with low zinc status or low baseline testosterone (Liger Te et al., 2023), zinc supplementation has been associated with increased testosterone. This appears to be most relevant in people who begin with low zinc or low testosterone levels. However, correcting inadequate zinc status is different from boosting testosterone levels in someone who already has adequate zinc status.

A more honest takeaway:

Adequate zinc helps support the foundations of healthy reproductive hormone function; more zinc does not automatically mean more testosterone.

Anyone who is concerned about testosterone levels should speak with a healthcare professional.

Zinc-Rich Foods for Men

Zinc is found naturally in a range of animal and plant foods.

Some of the richest dietary sources include:

  • Oysters and other shellfish
  • Beef
  • Lamb
  • Chicken
  • Eggs
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Cashews
  • Chickpeas and other legumes

Animal-based foods generally provide zinc in a form that is more readily absorbed by the body. Plant foods can also contribute meaningful amounts but compounds called phytates (which are naturally present in grains, legumes, nuts and seeds) can bind to zinc and reduce its absorption. This means zinc intake is not only about how much zinc a food contains but also how available that zinc is for the body to absorb.

Unlike some nutrients, the body does not maintain a large long-term store of zinc so regular dietary intake is important for maintaining adequate zinc status.

For some people, consistently meeting zinc needs through food alone may be more difficult. In these cases, a zinc supplement can provide another way to support adequate zinc intake but it should complement rather than replace a balanced diet.

When to Consider a Zinc Supplement

A zinc supplement may be worth considering when dietary intake is inadequate or when there is an increased risk of low zinc status.

This may be relevant for people who:

  • Eat little meat or seafood.
  • Follow a vegetarian, vegan or otherwise restrictive diet
  • Train frequently or at high intensity while struggling to meet nutritional needs through food
  • Consume alcohol regularly 
  • Have been advised by a healthcare professional to increase zinc intake

Final Thoughts: Foundations Before Testosterone Hacks

The more I learned about zinc, the clearer it became that its value is not in acting as a "testosterone booster" but in supporting the foundations of normal reproductive health.

Zinc plays a role in healthy reproductive hormones, sperm health and antioxidant defence. The research suggests its relationship with testosterone is most relevant when zinc status is inadequate. That is very different from assuming that taking more zinc will automatically lead to higher testosterone.

That is how I think about zinc today. It is one part of a much bigger picture that includes good nutrition, adequate sleep, training, recovery and overall health.

Get the foundations right first. More zinc does not automatically mean more testosterone.
